Frequently asked questions
Jump to a question:
What do the Friends of Lancaster Cemetery do?
We are a small group of volunteers who work alongside the council in order to try and improve Lancaster Cemetery and allow people to make the most of this amazing space in our city. Everything from litter picking and general tidying work to putting on events, tours and talks and creating opportunities for people to enjoy spending time in the cemetery.
What skills are you looking for?
We are happy to hear from people who have some gardening skills. Although major works are completed by the council, we help with smaller tasks such as flower bed maintenance and leaf clearing. General tidying around the cemetery is also a helpful task. We are also keen to hear from people who have skills in putting on events or who can take good quality photos for our website and facebook pages or write press releases etc.
How do I get involved?
If you're interested in joining us just drop us an email to friendsoflancastercemetery@gmail.com and tell us a little about yourself and how you think you might like to help. Alternatively you can complete the form on the Membership Application page and one of our team will get back to you.
Do I need to bring my own tools if I'm working in the cemetery?
The council has provided a range of tools for us to use so normally you wouldn't need to unless you were happy to do so.
Is the cemetery accessible?
Most of the cemetery is accessible to anyone with reduced mobility or in a wheelchair. There are paths running throughout the cemetery but there are some steep slopes which might be a challenge for wheelchair users and those assisting them. There is vehicle access up to the chapels area. Unfortuantely there are no toilet facilities of any sort in the cemetery.
What about Health & Safety?
We take health & safety very seriously and everyone has an induction by Lancaster City Council to ensure they are fully aware of the hazards and their own responsibilities whilst working in the cemetery.
Is there an age limit for volunteering?
Due to the nature of the work this is an adults only team with no upper age limit as long as you feel fit and well enough to join in. Anyone aged 18 and over is welcome to apply to join the team.
